A non-resident Indian (NRI) is an Indian citizen who has emigrated to another country, a person of Indian origin born outside India, or a person of Indian origin residing outside India. Other terms with the same meaning in India and abroad are expatriates from India. In common usage, this often includes people of Indian origin (and also people from other nations with Indian descent) who have adopted from other countries.
According to Statistics Canada, in 2006 there were 962 665 people are classified as Indian. The largest population of NRI is in United Arab Emirates - estimates that about 14 lakhs (1.4 million) with another million or so in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain and other Gulf countries.
